Key Points
- Each child needs a separate application and fee.
- The child must be under 18 when first applying and not living an independent life.
- Under the current rules there is no extra income amount for children in new applications.
- A child born in the UK to a British or settled parent is normally British.
Which children can be included
A child of the applicant, or of the couple, who is under 18, not married and not leading an independent life. Children who are already British or Irish do not need a visa.
Parental responsibility
If the child's other parent is not part of the application, the Home Office usually needs to see either that the applicant has sole responsibility for the child or that there are serious reasons making it right for the child to come. Consent from the other parent and court orders are typical evidence.
Finances and accommodation
For new applications there is currently no additional income amount for children. In transitional cases that began before 11 April 2024, additional amounts per child can still apply. The accommodation must be adequate for the whole family.
Documents
- Child's passport and birth certificate
- Evidence of custody or the other parent's consent
- School and medical records showing who cares for the child
Children born in the UK
A child born in the UK is British at birth if either parent is British or settled at the time. If not, the child may need permission in line with the parent.
