Key Points
- Civil partners are treated in the same way as spouses.
- Many overseas registered partnerships are recognised as civil partnerships.
- Couples planning a civil partnership in the UK can use the proposed civil partner route.
- The financial, English and accommodation requirements are identical.
Who the route is for
The route is for people in a civil partnership with a British or Irish citizen, a settled person or a partner with another qualifying status. Civil partnerships are open to same-sex and opposite-sex couples.
Overseas partnerships
A registered partnership formed abroad is generally treated as a civil partnership in the UK if it is a recognised type of overseas relationship, was validly formed under local law, and both of you were free to enter into it.
If your type of partnership is not recognised, the unmarried partner route may be the better fit.
Requirements
Proposed civil partners
If you plan to register your civil partnership in the UK, the proposed civil partner route works in the same way as the fiancé visa.
