Spouse Visa English Language Requirement

Applicants normally need to show knowledge of English unless an exemption applies. The family route is set at A1 for entry clearance and generally A2 when extending, while settlement normally requires at least B1 in speaking and listening together with the Life in the UK Test.

Key Points

  • First application: A1 speaking and listening.
  • Extension: A2 speaking and listening.
  • Settlement: B1 speaking and listening plus the Life in the UK Test.
  • Passing at a higher level early can save a later test.

Approved English tests

The test must be a Secure English Language Test taken with an approved provider at an approved centre. A test from another provider will not be accepted, however good the result.

If you pass at B1 or above for your first visa, you can normally rely on the same result at extension and at settlement, provided the test remains on the approved list.

Degrees taught in English

A degree from a UK university meets the requirement. A degree from outside the UK can meet it if it was taught in English and Ecctis confirms it is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher.

Nationality exemptions

Nationals of certain majority English-speaking countries meet the requirement automatically. The list includes Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, the USA and a number of Caribbean countries.

Other exemptions

  • Applicants aged 65 or over
  • Applicants with a physical or mental condition that prevents them from meeting the requirement
  • Exceptional circumstances that prevent the applicant from meeting the requirement before coming to the UK

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my English test expire?

Test results are valid for two years for a new application. A test already accepted in an earlier successful application can normally be relied on again at the same level.

My partner is fluent but has no certificate. Is that enough?

No. Fluency must be shown through an approved test, a qualifying degree or an exemption.
