Switching From a Fiancé Visa to a Spouse Visa

After marrying in the UK on a fiancé visa, you apply from inside the UK for permission to stay as a spouse. The application must be made before the six-month fiancé visa expires.

Key Points

  • Apply after the wedding and before the fiancé visa ends.
  • The financial and other requirements are assessed again.
  • You can work once the spouse visa is granted.
  • The five years for settlement start from this grant.

Steps

  1. 1

    Give notice

Give notice of marriage at a register office soon after arriving. A waiting period applies before the ceremony.

  2. 2

    Marry

Hold the ceremony and obtain the marriage certificate.

  3. 3

    Apply

Submit the online application for permission to stay as a partner, with the fee and health surcharge.

  4. 4

    Biometrics

Attend an appointment and upload your documents.

  5. 5

    Decision

Once granted, you can work and study.

Requirements at this stage

You must still meet the financial, accommodation and relationship requirements, with up-to-date evidence. The English level remains A1 for this first grant of permission as a partner.

If the wedding is delayed

If you cannot marry within the six months for a good reason, you can apply for an extension as a fiancé, showing the reason and that the wedding will take place soon.
